Used unusual Winchester 5A scope with markings saying it was made by Winchester in New Haven CT, but also has lyman LY5A markings, comes with Unertl mounts/spring, and the AO appears to have been replaced. Everything works and ready to use, assuming this was around the transition to Lyman period.
The Winchester A5 and later Lyman 5A are vintage 5-power (5x) external-adjustment telescopic rifle scopes.
Winchester A5 (1909–1928)
-
- Design: Built and sold by Winchester with a 5x magnification and a sliding-tube design to handle rifle recoil.
- Military Use: Widely used by U.S., British, and Canadian forces as a sniper scope during World War I (such as on M1903 Springfield and Ross rifles) and later by the U.S. Marine Corps through World War II.
- Features: Utilized external target mounts and a groove on the underside of the scope tube.
Lyman 5A (1929–1937)
- Transition: Lyman bought Winchester’s scope manufacturing business in 1928 and re-released the optic as the Lyman 5A with minor refinements.
- Improvements: Replaced the bottom tube groove with a “Pope-style” rib, upgraded to improved achromatic lenses to clear up color fringing at the edges, and swapped out the old rear “grasshopper” spring for a spring-loaded plunger system.
- Details: Features an overall length of 15 inches, weighs 12 ounces, and covers a field of view of about 18 feet per 100 yards
